SALARY HISTORIES / SALARY REQUIREMENTS

Many employers require you to submit a Salary History or address Salary Requirements. Salary histories and salary requirements are not the same thing and need to be handled quite differently. A salary history is what you have earned in the past, while salary requirements state your current compensation goals.

Your résumé is not the proper forum for a salary discussion. Never provide salary information unless you feel it is absolutely necessary in order to be considered for an interview. We don't recommend any reference regarding salary until it's to your advantage to do so. Remember, the person who mentions money first loses.

Salary requirements are best handled in the cover letter, while salary histories are best managed by creating a separate Salary History page. Both salary requirements and salary histories should include a statement to help reduce the impact of the information provided.
