Prior to 1990, there was no “standard” by which résumé writers could be judged. Highly experienced résumé professionals had no way to distinguish their expertise from those who were less gifted, less experienced, and less committed. For the résumé client — one résumé service was pretty much the same as any other.

This presented a serious shortcoming in our industry; after all résumé writers deal with people’s careers. That means we influence every aspect of their lives from the money they rely upon to live, to their home and family life, to their self-esteem, even to the productivity of companies across the land. That’s an awe-inspiring responsibility.

In 1990, The Professional Association of Résumé Writers and Career Coaches formed a Certification Committee to develop an “Industry Standard of Excellence” for testing résumé writers and awarding the Certified Professional Résumé Writer (CPRW) credential to those meeting the standard of excellence in résumé writing and career development strategies. The results were dramatic. Today’s résumé client has the means of selecting the industry’s best résumé professionals.
